Tea 101: Your Guide to the World of Loose Leaf Tea
Welcome to Angelic Secret Garden's Tea 101 — your cozy corner for everything tea. Whether you're a curious newcomer or a seasoned sipper, we're here to help you slow down, steep something beautiful, and discover the magic in every cup. 🌿
What Is Loose Leaf Tea?
Loose leaf tea is exactly what it sounds like — whole or large pieces of tea leaves (or botanicals) that are steeped freely in hot water, rather than being pre-packed into a paper tea bag. This matters more than you might think!
When tea leaves have room to unfurl and expand, they release their full depth of flavor, aroma, and beneficial compounds. Pre-bagged teas are often made from "dust" and "fannings" — the smallest, lowest-grade remnants of the tea-making process — which brew up flat and one-dimensional by comparison.
At Angelic Secret Garden, every tea we offer is a handmade, small-batch loose leaf blend, carefully curated and packed into beautiful reusable stainless steel tins. You're not just getting a better cup — you're getting a whole experience.
Tisane & Herbal Tea vs. Traditional Tea: What's the Difference?
This is one of the most common questions we get, and it's a great one!
Traditional teas — including green tea, black tea, white tea, and oolong — all come from the same plant: Camellia sinensis. The differences between them come down to how the leaves are processed (oxidized, steamed, rolled, etc.). Traditional teas naturally contain caffeine.
Tisanes (pronounced tih-ZAHN) are herbal infusions made from flowers, herbs, roots, fruits, and botanicals — anything other than the Camellia sinensis plant. They are naturally caffeine-free, making them a wonderful choice any time of day or night.
Some of our most beloved tisanes include:
- Rose Petal — delicate, floral, and romantic
- Lavender Flower — calming and aromatic
- Chamomile Flower — gentle and soothing
- Moroccan Mint — bright, refreshing, and invigorating
- Butterfly Pea Flower — stunning color-changing magic in your cup
- Marigold Flower, Blue Cornflower, Hibiscus Petals — vibrant and full of character

How to Brew Loose Leaf Tea Perfectly
Brewing loose leaf tea is a simple, meditative ritual once you get the hang of it. Here's everything you need to know:
What You'll Need
- Your favorite loose leaf tea (about 1 teaspoon per 8 oz of water)
- A tea infuser — we love our Long Grip Heart Shaped Stainless Steel Tea Infuser, which comes with a removable handmade tassel for a little extra charm
- Fresh, filtered water
- A kettle or pot
- Optional: our vegan sugar cubes and bamboo tea tongs for a truly elevated experience
Step-by-Step Brewing Guide
-
Heat your water. Temperature matters! Different teas thrive at different temperatures:
- Green teas: 160–180°F (too hot and they turn bitter)
- Black teas: 200–212°F (a full rolling boil)
- Herbal tisanes: 200–212°F (most florals and herbs love a full boil)
- Measure your tea. Use about 1 teaspoon of loose leaf tea per 8 oz of water. For a stronger brew, add a little more tea — not more time.
- Add tea to your infuser. Place your infuser in your mug or teapot and pour the hot water over it.
-
Steep with intention. Steeping times vary:
- Green teas: 2–3 minutes
- Black teas: 3–5 minutes
- Herbal tisanes: 5–7 minutes (or longer for a deeper flavor)
- Remove the infuser. Don't leave it in too long — over-steeping can make teas bitter or overly strong.
- Sweeten if desired. Our vegan sugar cubes dissolve beautifully and add just the right touch of sweetness.
- Sip slowly and enjoy. You've earned this moment. ✨

The Benefits of Organic & Fair Trade Tea
When you choose organic tea, you're choosing leaves grown without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilizers. Since tea leaves are steeped directly in your drinking water, what's on the leaf ends up in your cup — so going organic is a meaningful choice for your health and peace of mind.
Fair trade practices ensure that the farmers and workers who grow and harvest your tea are paid fairly and work in safe, humane conditions. When you sip a fair trade tea, you're part of a chain of care that stretches from the garden to your cup.
At Angelic Secret Garden, we're committed to sourcing with intention. Our teas are handmade in small batches so we can maintain quality and traceability every step of the way. Try our Organic Mint Chamomile Flower Loose Leaf Tea or our Organic Artisan Red Mountain Rose Bud Loose Leaf Tea for a taste of what thoughtful sourcing feels like.
